AŽD wins Rail Baltica 1 project in Lithuania

Czech technology company AŽD, together with its Lithuanian partner UAB FIMA, has concluded a contract with Lithuanian Railways (LTG-Infra) within the framework of Rail Baltica 1 for the modernization, expansion and maintenance of signalling equipment and other systems on the Kaunas – Kazlų Rūda – Polish border railway section and at Palemonas station. The total value of the delivery is 112 million euros.

The subject of the delivery is the modification of the existing and installation of a new digital signalling device of the StationSWing ESA 44 type in ten railway stations. The project also includes the installation of GateSWing PZZ-GTS level crossing systems, FieldSWing LED signals, PointSWing point machines, axle counters with ALSN coding and the integration of all supplied technologies into the DaVinci central control system. All technologies will be supplied by AŽD. The implementation is planned for 2,5 years.

The local partner, UAB FIMA, is providing the supply of telecommunication systems, cabling, power supply systems and the implementation of all related construction works. The project also includes Technical Support for a period of 20 years.

"On the way to winning this project, we faced a number of obstacles. Alstom blocked the signing of the contract for almost a year through lawsuits and denunciations, which ultimately proved to be pointless. This caused the contracting authority significant financial damage, which will have to be compensated by increasing the price for this lost time," says Zdeněk Chrdle, CEO of AŽD.

The evaluation of the bid also included the area of so-called „National Security“. AŽD had to prove that its ownership structure was not in any way connected to Russia, Belarus or China and that all supplied technologies were products of Czech origin manufactured in the Czech Republic.

"Rail Baltica 1 in Lithuania and the upcoming Rail Baltica project, which connects Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, are among the EU's top projects with extraordinary prestige. The fact that AŽD technologies made it to the shortlist of signalling suppliers for the subsequent part of this European corridor confirms their competitiveness on a European scale," adds Zdeněk Chrdle.
